Se spune că atunci când împăratul bizantin Iustinian a intrat în biserica finalizată pentru prima dată în 536 d.Hr., el a strigat: "Slavă lui Dumnezeu că am fost judecat demn de o asemenea lucrare. Solomon, te-am depășit!" Aya Sofya (fosta Hagia Sophia) a fost declarația impresionantă a împăratului față de lumea bogăției și a capacității tehnice a imperiului său. Tradiția a susținut că zona din jurul tronului împăratului în cadrul bisericii era centrul oficial al lumii. Prin transformarea sa într-o moschee, după ce armatele otomane au cucerit Constantinopolul, la transformarea sa ulterioară într-un muzeu din secolul XX, Aya Sofya a rămas unul dintre cele mai valoroase repere din Istanbul.
